Menşe adı and mahreç işareti are two types of Turkish geographical indication. In the first, all production, processing and other steps must take place inside the defined area; in the second, at least one of those steps must take place there, according to TÜRKPATENT.
What does menşe adı mean?
A menşe adı, or designation of origin, links all or the essential qualities of a product to the natural and human factors of a particular place. Its production, processing and other required steps take place within a defined geographical area. The name therefore says more than where the product is sold. It describes a strong relationship between the product and its place of production.
The geographical boundary is stated for each product. It cannot safely be guessed from the city name on a label. A registered area may cover more than a city centre, so the particular registry entry has to be read. That entry also explains the production method required for the protected name.
What does mahreç işareti mean?
A mahreç işareti, or indication of source, identifies a product whose distinguishing characteristic, reputation or another feature is associated with a geographical area. At least one production, processing or other step must occur there. This does not say that all remaining steps always happen elsewhere. The specific product record determines the actual requirements.
Both types are registered geographical indications. A mahreç işareti is not an unregistered local nickname, and a menşe adı is not a taste award. Their definitions describe a product’s geographical and production connection. They do not rank one food above another for flavour or nutrition.
How can you identify the type?
Look up the product in the TÜRKPATENT registry and read the stated registration type. Then check the defined area and the described production method. An emblem on packaging can indicate the type, but the full conditions are in the registry document. Do not infer the type from a promotional slogan or a place name alone.
What mistakes are common?
Being sold in a town does not make a product a menşe adı, because sales location is not the same as the location of its production steps. Nor may every step of a mahreç product happen elsewhere: at least one must take place within its registered area. The classification also does not establish a health benefit. These conclusions need separate evidence if they are ever claimed.
Can one term replace the other?
TÜRKPATENT describes registration under one of these two types. For a specific product, the registry states which applies. Calling the same product by either term without checking its record obscures the production rule. Familiarity with a region alone cannot settle the question.
What is the short answer?
Menşe adı requires the whole production chain in the defined area; mahreç işareti requires at least one step there. The link between the product’s qualities and the place is also defined differently. Always read the product’s actual registry entry along with the general definitions.
