A festive-table staple in Greece, melomakarona is made by baking a semolina dough and dipping the warm cookies in honey syrup. Scented with orange and topped with chopped walnuts, it is a soft cookie that children enjoy just as much as adults.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Make the dough

20 min

Knead together the semolina, flour, oil, orange juice, orange zest, baking powder and cinnamon, and shape into small oval cookies.

2

Bake

25 min

Arrange the cookies on a parchment-lined tray and bake in an oven preheated to 180°C for 25 minutes until lightly golden underneath.

3

Make the syrup

15 min

Bring the honey, sugar and water to a boil in a pot and keep simmering for 5 minutes.

4

Dip in syrup

5 min

Dip the hot cookies into the hot syrup for a few seconds, lift out and drain, then sprinkle chopped walnuts on top.

Reminder

Dip the cookies into the hot syrup as soon as they come out of the oven; once cooled they will not absorb the syrup and will stay dry. Allergens: contains gluten (semolina, flour) and tree nuts (walnut).

Editor's Note Editörün Notu

Do not chop the walnuts too finely; coarser pieces stay crunchier and do not sink into the syrup.
