Tahmis Kahvesi's story reaches back to 1635, when Yemen Ağa and Mustafa Ağa, a flag-bearer of the Ottoman court, opened a coffee house in Gaziantep's old bazaar, with its earnings devoted, by the brand's own account, to the city's Mevlevi lodge. Tradition holds that word of the coffee ground there reached the court of Sultan Murad IV. 'Tahmis' is the Turkish word for the place where coffee is ground, and the business describes itself as having kept that tradition unbroken, counting itself among the world's oldest continuously operating coffee houses. Its range includes Turkish coffee, dibek coffee, the caffeine-free menengiç coffee made from the fruit of a terebinth tree native to Gaziantep, Ottoman coffee, flavoured coffees, salep, cacao, filter coffee and espresso, sold in 100g, 250g and 500g packs. Today Tahmis, operating under Arasa Turizm Gıda San. ve Tic. Ltd. Şti., runs food-safety-certified modern facilities, exports abroad, and sells nationwide through its online shop at tahmis.com.tr.
