The flagship Anafartalar Caddesi store of Şekerci Ali Galip, founded in Kemeraltı in 1901 and still run by the fourth and fifth generations of the family.

About The Venue

Overview

Şekerci Ali Galip has run as a family confectionery business in İzmir's Kemeraltı bazaar since 1901, now in its fourth and fifth generation of ownership. Its founder, Ali Galip Efendi, was born in Bursa in 1860 and moved to İzmir in 1884, where he trained under Greek and Armenian confectioners before opening his own shop and building a long-running local rivalry with a competitor nicknamed 'Çatal Sakal.' His nephew, Mehmet Irmak, later took the honorary title 'Şekercibaşı' and became known citywide after building a scale model of the Clock Tower entirely out of sugar for the 1938 İzmir International Fair. The house specializes in lokum, chocolate, helva, and syrup-soaked pastries such as baklava, alongside fresh and dry cakes, almond sweets, dragées, candied chestnuts, preserves, and ice cream. This particular shop, on Anafartalar Caddesi next to Kemeraltı, is the brand's founding address and the source location for its second branch in Karabağlar's Üçyol area. Everything on the source page is built around confectionery and pastry, with no mention anywhere of alcohol or pork.
