Başiskele district was formed in 2008 by merging the towns of Bahçecik, Yeniköy, Karşıyaka, Yuvacık and Kullar, and it borders Gölcük to the west and Kartepe to the east; the Yuvacık Dam, which supplies part of Kocaeli's water, sits within its boundaries.
