The easiest way to tell the two apart before baking is to watch how the dough behaves at rest: yeasted dough visibly gains volume and develops small surface bubbles, while unleavened dough stays flat no matter how long it sits. A common home-baking mistake is substituting baking powder for yeast (or the reverse) in equal amounts — the two release gas on completely different timelines, so the swap usually leaves the dough under-risen or gives it a flat, chemical aftertaste.
Choosing Between the Two
Pick yeasted dough when time allows and flavor complexity matters — daily bread, pide, enriched doughs. Pick unleavened dough when speed, portability or dietary rules matter more than a chewy crumb. For cake, the choice is already made by the recipe's chemical leavener.
